Personal development

A supportive environment where students can flourish and succeed

Supporting our students’ personal development is of paramount importance to us.

While many sixth forms prepare you for entry to university, we see our role as much wider than this. At ICS, we prepare you to navigate the changing world and support you in becoming well-rounded individuals with the skills, attitudes and mindsets to manage the complexities and turbulent change of the 21st century. We will help you develop your critical thinking, reflection and problem-solving skills, while building your professionalism, resilience, confidence and a positive and proactive mindset.

Our extensive Personal Development Programme includes the sub strands:

Code Breakers

In light of our dedication to delivering a holistic education, our Code Breaker programme is part of our Personal Development offer, ensuring our students develop into well-rounded, articulate young adults.

The programme educates our students of the social codes which exist in the professional world without which entry to and success is limited; we develop students’ professionalism, etiquette, positive attitudes and life skills.

Leadership development

Our aspiration is that students progress to become the future leaders of our society shaping its direction, occupying positions of influence in professional and civic life.

As well as leadership roles such as the Year 12 Headship Team, Scholarship Society Leaders, and Mentors to younger students, we ensure all of our students develop leadership through engagement with programmes such as Debating Society and Old Vic’s ‘Take the Lead’.

PSHCE and fusion life skills

PSHE education helps young people to stay safe, healthy and prepared for life’s opportunities. This includes helping them to deal with critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change.

From making informed decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils prepare for all the opportunities, challenges, life decisions and responsibilities they’ll face.

Our programme is delivered with these principles:

  • Critical Thinking at the centre of our sessions
  • Integrated into the culture of the sixth form
  • Use of experts and professional services
  • Extracurricular & Wellbeing

Supporting our student’s mental and physical wellbeing is of paramount importance to us. In any high-performing organisation with talented and ambitious individuals there inevitably comes some pressure to succeed and do well. At ICS, we recognise this and have numerous mechanisms and initiatives in place to support students who may need additional assistance.

We strongly believe that for students to succeed and flourish during their time at ICS and beyond, their mental and physical wellbeing needs to be looked after and catered for just as much as their academic interests.

Every two weeks students have wellbeing social events and students have regular clubs where they enjoy their passions such as Music, Art, and Chess Club.

Cultural enrichment

Students regularly have the opportunity to visit galleries, museums and attend the London theatre. ICS benefits from a link with The Old Vic theatre in London, with regular student workshops and the chance to attend opening night performances
