How is this subject examined?

  • Paper 1 – Core Pure Mathematics 1 – 1hr 30, 25%
  • Paper 2 – Core Pure Mathematics 2 – 1hr 30, 25%
  • Paper 3 – Option Topic 1 – 1hr 30, 25%
  • Paper 4 – Option Topic 2 – 1hr 30, 25%

The option topics we have chosen are Further Pure 1 and Mechanics 1, but there is scope for alternate topics to be chosen in future years.

What is this course about? Why study this subject?

Further Mathematics is a separate A-Level. It provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and more sophisticated mathematical concepts. If you enjoy studying mathematics and you are good at it then you should strongly consider taking Further Mathematics. Students taking Further Mathematics find it an overwhelmingly enjoyable, rewarding and empowering experience.

Minimum GCSE grades: 8-9 in Mathematics, but Further Mathematics at GCSE is desirable.

  • Mathematics is required to study Further Mathematics. Further Mathematics is advised if studying Physics A-Level.
