Year 12 Tradition: Visit to Wadham College, Oxford

As part of their Year 12 Induction Week, our students continued an annual ICS tradition with a visit to Wadham College, Oxford, on 2nd September.

As soon as we arrived, we headed to the Moser Theatre for a “Being Super-Curricular” workshop with Dr Hugh Munro. The session encouraged students to think beyond their usual lessons and consider how they can develop their interests through wider reading, independent research and exploring subjects that genuinely spark their curiosity. It was a fantastic way to begin the day and set the tone for the experiences ahead.

Quote from Soleil in Year 12: The Oxford trip was very insightful and taught me what universities are looking for in an application. The lecture was also very engaging and introduced me to interesting concepts and dilemmas.

A Formal College Lunch

We then made our way to the impressive Okinaga Room for a formal sit-down lunch. The setting provided a wonderful opportunity for students to experience a little of the tradition and history of college life.  Before the lunch, Dr Munro talked to us about the paintings in the room, giving students an insight into the people and stories connected with Wadham. We enjoyed a two-course meal while also learning about formal dining etiquette –  particularly useful preparation for our code breakers and future university students!

The Oxford Treasure Hunt

After lunch, it was time to explore Oxford. Students took part in an Oxford treasure hunt, working in teams to follow clues, solve challenges and navigate their way around the city.  The activity was a great opportunity for students to get to know each other during their first week of Year 12, while developing their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. It also gave everyone the chance to see more of Oxford and experience the unique atmosphere of this historic university city.

We captured plenty of moments throughout the day, with photographs showing students enjoying the college, the city and the treasure hunt.

The visit was a brilliant addition to our Year 12 Induction Week, combining academic enrichment, university experience, teamwork and plenty of fun. It gave students a glimpse of what life at an Oxford college can be like and, we hope, inspired them to make the most of the opportunities available to them during their time in the sixth form.

A huge thank you to Dr Hugh Munro and everyone at Wadham College for welcoming our Year 12 students and helping to make their induction week so memorable!
