Year 12 students on their field trip to Iceland

Last January two students from our Year 12 Cohort were fortunate to visit Iceland, where they did the Golden Circle Tour and experienced how a hot spring was used to generate the thermal energy. Personal development and developing cultural capital is a huge part of our offer at ICS.

Cultural capital in education involves exposing students to a large variety of subject areas, arts and experiences, therefore developing broader knowledge of the world as well as promoting character-building qualities that lead to creating well-rounded global citizens. Experiences such as international trips are one of the ways we support this development.

“We went on the Golden Circle Tour, where we saw the great Geysir, the Golden waterfall, and visited the Thingvellir National Park. Then, we went on the South Shore Tour, where we saw Skogar and Seljlands waterfalls, and a glacier. At the Blue Lagoon, we got to witness how the steam from the hot spring was being used as geothermal green energy, it was interesting to learn how a small town is powered only on this type of energy. We were so lucky to see the Northern Lights, it was such an incredible experience, this gave me a new appreciation of Science.” Mari

“Visiting Iceland was such an eye-opener. Being in such a different and new environment as well as learning about a culture was momentous for me. Spending time with the other Humanities students was really fun and we enjoyed getting to know new people. We visited mountain ranges, glaciers and geysers . The fact that in Iceland they eat reindeer and horses came as a culture shock to me. Iceland may have been freezing cold, but the warmth of the community and people was beyond memorable.” Majid
