ICS at the ESU Schools’ Mace Debate Competition
Published: Fri 5 December 2025“Should countries impose a tourism tax due to the over-tourism happening in major cities?”
On Tuesday, my peers and I took part in the ESU Schools’ Mace debate competition. The English Speaking Union (ESU) is a charity working to give people the speaking and listening skills as well as the cross-cultural understanding they need to thrive. We competed against two other schools and discussed issues of over-tourism and if tourism tax is necessary. Being a part of the ESU debate was a huge honour and personal turning poiint for me. As well as being able to step out of my comfort zone, this experience has taught me resilience. I have learnt many skills that I know will aid me in the future.
The debate, and all its reading preparation, taught me effective collaboration with team members – the end of the debate, we managed to build a detailed and compelling argument that we could present to the two other schools. I learnt how to be aware of my body language and word choices so that I can appeal to my audience and captivate their attention.
Sorcha, Education Coordinator at ESU said “You spoke with good tone which was persuasive and convincing.”
Debate is a thrilling challenge with constant thriving competition which enables character growth so I can excel in the future. It was a fantastic experience to be able to coherently express our opinions to a crowd. The ESU has been a vital and in my option, successful chapter in my journey. A huge thank you to Salma and Felix in Year 12 for their amazing effort and to ESU for providing us with this opportunity.
