From Classroom to Commons: Anusha’s experience as an elected MYP
Published: Wed 12 March 2025As an elected Youth MP for Redbridge, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the annual House of Commons sitting on February 28th, where I took part in a debate on one of the key motions selected by Youth MP’s during our annual residential at Warwick university. This experience was a defining moment in my role, as it allowed me to engage in meaningful discussions about issues that directly affect young people across the country.
The motions up for debate included lowering the voting age to 16, increasing the national minimum wage, making transport free for under 18’s, promoting political literacy in the curriculum, and making period products free. East of these topics holds significant importance, as they address the concerns and needs of young people today. However, for me, the most critical motion was increasing the national minimum wage. Given the ongoing cost of living crisis, I strongly feel that young people deserve better financial support to meet their basic needs and contribute to their households.
During my speech, I emphasised how an increase in the national minimum wage would bring much needed relief to young workers. Many young people rely on part time jobs to support themselves and, in some cases, their families. Raising wages would not only help alleviate financial pressures but also promote a healthier and more stable lifestyle. I argued that fair wages allow young people to focus on their education and personal development with the constant stress of financial insecurity. Having my argument met with the approval of the Speaker was a rewarding moment, as it confirmed the importance of this issue.
This experience at the House of Commons reinforced my belief in the power of youth voices in shaping policy and advocating for change. Moving forward, I am determined to centre my manifesto around this issue, ensuring that I continue to advocate for fairer wages and better support for young people. I wish to make a lasting impact, both during my term as Youth MP and in the future.
