Climate Change Course at ICS

ICS is proud to hold climate change sessions every Friday at lunch. This programme takes place in order to spread awareness of the issue of Climate Change and how we can combat this via planning ahead.

So far in the sessions, students have been discussing the challenging side of climate change and are closely inspecting the tipping points – small changes leading to significant, and often irreversible, effects. For example, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is a tipping point to a highly decreased albedo effect. This is due to a lot less sunlight now being reflected, and consequently, increasing the temperature of the planet.

Additionally, topics such as the positive and negative implications of carbon budgets have been discussed, as well as how the uncertainty around climate change can cause the public to potentially be skeptical about higher carbon usage. Lots of resources are used during these sessions including the podcast Green Jobs | Podcast created by our partner school, City of London School for Girls. This has given the students a valuable insight into the field of sustainability by talking to professionals who work in a variety of jobs that are related to climate action.

As the weeks go on, more and more intriguing topics get introduced and intensely spoken about.

“As part of the City of London Academies Trust, ICS has been able to offer students at our Sixth Form access to a bespoke Climate Change course first designed and taught at City of London School for Girls. The course facilitates the exploration of a range of challenges and potential solutions to Climate Change, and offers students the opportunity to explore a wider range of contemporary opinions and pivotal research. The course features visits to sites outside of the local area and students are then graded on the outputs that are independently designed, produced and disseminated they are graded not only on the depth of their understanding, but also on the extent of their impact on the wider community.” Ms Hogan – Head of Geography at City of London Academy Highgate Hill

The Climate Change Course is a place where individuals passionate about the environment can all sit together and discuss their thoughts and feelings about the current state of the world. A huge thanks to Ms Hogan for helping this course be possible!
