Alastair Campbell Politics Talk

Alastair Campbell is a former journalist turned strategist and spokesperson for Tony Blair and New Labour. He is now a writer, consultant strategist and a podcaster for the famous podcast ‘The Rest is Politics’.

Mr Campbell talked about the importance of young people entering politics and explained how relevant it is for us and our future. Students understood the importance of reading and watching the news. He explained how we should not be discouraged by news that may be disappointing and upsetting and should always continue to be read into politics and form political opinions. Mr Campbell had said that “Everything is political” which is why we should always be informed in the politics of our country and the world as it plays a huge part in our every day lives.

Mr Campbell began to share his opinion on political matters in the UK and globally that have happened in the past few weeks. This allowed students to critically think about their own opinion on such matters and form their own judgements. Mr Campbell also spoke about the importance of mental health as a politician but also as a person. He spoke about some of the difficulties he had faced with depression and anxiety and how crucial it is to ask and receive help.

From this talk, students understood the difficulties of being a politician but also how rewarding it is to be able to make change. Students left having a better understanding of the political landscape and being more appreciative towards those in politics.

We are very grateful to Mr Campbell for coming in and inspiring our students to get involved in politics. As he described it is not just a job but a way to get involved within your community and make a change to society.
